Making the Centerpiece Fountain with Bill Underhill
The Fassett GreenSpace was originally intended to host a fountain as the centerpiece of the meditiation labyrinth. AFRA was awarded a grant of $15,667 in 2017 by the Garman Family Foundation through the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo. AFRA’s proposal had a fountain at the center of the labyrinth but when it was necessary to change the dimensions of the rings, the budget no longer could include a fountain. AFRA’s board notified the Garman Family Foundation of the situation but instead of accepting the board of AFRA’s suggestion that a sculpture be the focal point, Garman Family Foundation allocated an additional $6,000 for the fountain.
In a moment of serendipity, AFRA board members were approached by Wellsville resident and world famous bronze artist, Bill Underhill, who was interested in creating a custom artwork for the space. The fountain – designed and made by Bill Underhill, with assistance from students of Coral Lambert, Alfred University professor of sculpture, and her students – will be completed in the spring of 2019. It will be cast in bronze during the current semester, with the casting taking place at Alfred University’s National Casting Center Foundry in Alfred, NY. Underhill is a professor emeritus of Alfred University and in his tenure designed and created the King Alfred statue located in the center of the Alfred University campus.
On Thursday, November 15, 2018, sculpture students at Alfred University cast the first half of the fountain in Bronze, with the second casting scheduled for November 29th. This act truly symbolizes the communal element of the Fassett GreenSpace, and illustrates the shear amount of stakeholders interested in volunteering their time to promote the impact and sustainability of the Fassett GreenSpace.
Install your work in the Fassett GreenSpace
The Fassett GreenSPace is not only an earthwork and large-scale public sculpture in itself, but it is the intention of AFRA for the GreenSpace to exist as an interactive space for art and creativity. After its installation, local artists will be invited to include their work in and around the labyrinth and utilize it as an outdoor gallery.
AFRA is also collaborating with the Wellsville Creative Arts Center to create a mosaic sign for the GreenSpace. This sign is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2019.
