Opportunities for Collaboration
There are no spaces for gardening within walking distance of the village. The closest community garden is 15 miles away from Wellsville in the nearby village of Alfred. The Alfred garden is a great opportunity for their community members, but is too far for the people of Wellsville to travel, especially for students and underserved individuals that may not have vehicle access. The Steering Committee of the Alfred Community Garden is available to consult with for advice on managing the GreenSpace.
The board of directors of Art for Rural America consists of farmers, artists, businessmen and women, and most importantly, dedicated Wellsville community members. They have hired a garden coordinator who is knowledgeable about marketing, advertising, event planning, and is passionate about community development and gardening.
The collaborating organizations in this project are the Immaculate School of Conception, David A. Howe Library, The Wellsville Girl Scouts, Wellsville Public School, the Wellsville YMCA, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County, the WIC office of Allegany County, The Wellsville Creative Arts Center, Total Senior Care, and the Catholic Charities Food Pantry. Either the organization's program coordinators, certified teachers, or the Garden Coordinator will be responsible for implementing classes at the GreenSpace.
The First Year
The intended impacts of the Fassett GreenSpace are to engage and educate the villagers of Wellsville in gardening and nutrition education and to provide a safe space for art, meditation, and outdoor recreation through the construction of a GreenSpace. Many community members will visit or utilize the space due to its central location in the Village.
However, AFRA has made it a priority to:
- Collaboratie local organizations throughout the year for successful programming.
- Facilitate twenty educational programs held in the GreenSpace in the year 2018.
- Engage over 230 people (5% of the population) directly through the activities held in the garden.
- Produce over 2,000 pounds of vegetables and establishing the proper channels for their distribution to individuals facing food insecurity.
If you are interested in collaborating a workshop or event at the Fassett GreenSpace for your organization, contact us and our Garden Coordinator will be in touch with you to create a special event for your needs.
